Essential oil:
Rosemary rosmarinus
officinalis
 |
Rosemary
is a shrubby evergreen bush, that can grow up to 6 ft. It has
narrow silvery-green leaves with pale blue flowers. It is
highly aromatic, both a refreshing and stimulating herbal scent.
Depending on the chemotype it may be quite camphoraceous.
The essential oil is
extracted by steam distillation using the fresh flowers and leaves.
Rosemary is native to
the Mediterranean, but is now grown in California, Russia, the
Middle East, Britain, Portugal, and China. Although, the main
producers are France, Spain, Croatia, Tunisia and Morocco.
The oil is usually
colorless, but may be pale yellow. There are three principal
chemotypes: camphor-borneol from Spain, 1,8-cineole from
Tunisian, and verbenone from France.

Rosemary
oil blends well with other herbal oils such as basil, lavender, and
myrtle. It also works beautifully with most citrus and some spice
oils. It is considered a top note when used in perfumery with a
medium to high odor intensity.
Rosemary is
one of the best known and most used of aromatic herbs and one of the
earliest used for food, magic, and medicine. It was used in the
Middle Ages to drive away evil spirits and protect against the plague.
Nicholas Culpeper claimed it could aid all ills of the head and brain.
It has been
used for a wide range of complaints including; headache, liver congestion,
muscular and reheumatic problems, circulatory problems, and
respiratory disorders. It is also beneficial for skin and hair.
Rosemary aids concentration and strengthens mental clarity and awareness.
While many
sources caution against using rosemary essential oil if you have high
blood pressure, Neal's Yard Remedies Essential Oils by Susan Curtis states
that there is in fact no evidence to support this view. Rosemary is
non-toxic, non-irritant in dilution, and non-sensitizing.
